Feeling Like an Imposter? You’re Not Alone & You’re Not Failing.
If you’ve ever felt like a bit of a fraud in your nail career, like you’re not qualified enough, not talented enough, or just not “there” yet, this one’s for you. Because in our latest HONA Podcast episode, we talked about something that hits home for a lot of us: imposter syndrome.
Whether you’re brand new to the industry or ten years in, chances are you’ve had that moment where you think, “Am I actually good enough to be doing this?”
Here’s the thing… even the most successful nail techs and brand owners have felt that way. Myself and Charlotte included.
Let’s Get One Thing Straight: You Are Skilled
Being a nail tech is no small thing. The creativity, precision and attention to detail you bring to the table is incredible. This is not just “doing nails.” It’s artistry. It’s care. It’s problem solving. And it’s a professional skill that takes time to build and a lifetime to master. You’re allowed to feel proud of that.
Imposter Syndrome Happens to the Best of Us
Imposter syndrome isn’t something you “grow out of” once you hit a certain level. It creeps in when you’re trying something new. When you’re being visible. When you’re stepping outside your comfort zone. The moment you start levelling up, those doubts often tag along for the ride. Even at HONA, we’ve had launches and projects where we’ve asked ourselves, “Are we really ready for this?” That feeling never fully disappears, but you get better at carrying on anyway.
Stay in Your Lane, Celebrate Your Wins
It’s easy to get caught up in what other techs are doing, especially with social media showing everyone’s highlight reel. But your journey is yours. If you got your first regular client this week, celebrate it. If you finally nailed your builder gel application, amazing. Every milestone counts.
Be Inspired, But Don’t Compare
Take inspiration from other artists, but don’t let it make you feel behind. There’s a difference between being motivated by someone and feeling like you’re not doing enough. Your clients choose you because of your energy, style and experience. That’s your superpower.
Challenges Are Part of It
Every setback is an opportunity in disguise. The tricky client. The set that didn’t go how you wanted. The quiet week. These are all part of the process. Learn, tweak, keep going. Growth happens in those moments.
Mike and Charls Final Thoughts
If you’ve been feeling like an imposter lately, take this as your reminder, you’re doing better than you think. Every tech started somewhere. Every influencer was once a beginner. You don’t need to be perfect to be valuable. Keep showing up. Keep learning. Keep going. You’ve got this.
